Its construction was ordered by Sultan Al-Mansur Saif al-Din Qalawun, one of the most prominent sultans of the Mamluk maritime era. He founded a dynasty that ruled Egypt, the Levant, and other places for more than a century. He began his rule himself in the year 678 AH / 1279 AD, and ended with Sultan Al-Salih Saladin Al-Hajj in the year 784 AH / 1382 AD, and he is credited with the emergence of the second Mamluk state.
